Zakat & Waqf: Impact on Women and Community Development

  • April 23, 2026
  • Comments off

Home / ZAKAT & WAQF: IMPACT ON WOMEN AND COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT The function and contribution of zakat and waqf are explicit and frequently emphasised in many discourses. The contributions of these two tools to the economic development of women and community, on the other hand, appear to be underappreciated. Meanwhile, the contributions may trigger a reciprocal process in which women who benefit from zakat and waqf will play an ideal role in helping to expand the potential of zakat and waqf to other target groups. As a result, it is advised that themes of women’s and community development be highlighted in the zakat discourse through the creation of publications on the subject. This immediately explains the importance of zakat and waqf, which are so comprehensive and take into consideration every element of Muslim life in general. As a result, this book seeks to fulfil contemporary demands. Aside from being a research study, it may also serve as a reference for organizations concerned, such as zakat institutions and other institutions, in developing plans connected to zakat and waqf for Muslim growth, particularly in the dimension of women and community. Chapters In Book: New Ideas and Concepts on Zakat and Waqf Towards Society 5.0

Home / CHAPTERS IN BOOK NEW IDEAS AND CONCEPTS ON ZAKAT AND WAQF TOWARDS SOCIETY 5.0 Efforts to modernize zakat and waqf management in Malaysia are increasingly focused on integrating advanced technologies to address traditional challenges such as transparency, efficiency, and public trust. As society transitions toward Society 5.0, which emphasizes human-centric technological convergence, the adoption of blockchain, artificial intelligence (AI), and digital platforms is viewed as a primary strategy for enhancing Islamic social finance.   Technological Applications in Zakat and Waqf Blockchain Technology: Blockchain is a decentralized, immutable digital ledger that records transactions securely across a network. It enhances transparency by allowing stakeholders to track funds from contribution to distribution, thereby reducing the risk of fraud and mismanagement. Smart Contracts: These are self-executing agreements with terms coded directly into the blockchain. In zakat and waqf management, smart contracts can automate fund allocation based on predefined criteria, such as verifying a recipient’s financial need or ensuring waqf income is distributed according to donor intentions. Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Big Data: AI can analyze vast datasets to identify vulnerable populations, predict community needs, and optimize resource allocation. For example, AI-driven platforms can tailor support programs like skills training for zakat recipients to help them break the cycle of poverty. Digital Platforms and Crowdfunding: Mobile applications and online portals like WaqfChain and GlobalSadaqah simplify the donation process, enabling global participation and providing real-time updates on project progress.   Strategic Benefits and Success Models Enhanced Efficiency and Transparency: Digital systems reduce administrative costs and bureaucratic delays. Blockchain provides a permanent audit trail, fostering trust among donors. Success Stories: Malaysia: The Selangor Zakat Board has introduced digital platforms for calculation and payment, while WaqfChain leverages blockchain for asset management. Indonesia: The Indonesian Waqf Board uses blockchain to record and verify assets, increasing public trust. UAE and Turkey: The UAE uses AI for proactive beneficiary outreach, while Turkey employs smart contracts for automated zakat distribution.   Challenges and Future Directions Implementation Hurdles: High initial costs, a shortage of technical expertise, and outdated legal frameworks are significant barriers. Ethical and Shariah Considerations: Integrating technology must align with Islamic values. Concerns include data privacy, algorithmic bias, and the potential “digital divide” that may marginalize those without internet access. Strategic Recommendations: To achieve the goals of Society 5.0, policymakers should develop standardized regulatory frameworks, invest in capacity building for personnel, and foster public-private partnerships to drive innovation. Home / ZAKAT IN MALAYSIA Established in 1991, Pusat Pungutan Zakat (PPZ-MAIWP) is the first zakat institution in Malaysia to adopt a corporate management model and computerized system to optimize zakat collection. While PPZ-MAIWP focuses on efficient collection via digital and physical channels, the Baitulmal under the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) manages the distribution of these funds to eight eligible asnaf categories. This specialized approach aims to address urban poverty and empower the Muslim community through diverse welfare, education, and economic assistance programs. Specialized Management: In the Federal Territories, zakat roles are split: PPZ-MAIWP handles collection while MAIWP Baitulmal handles distribution. Corporate Efficiency: PPZ-MAIWP utilizes a corporate structure and advanced IT to facilitate professional, user-friendly zakat transactions. Diverse Distribution: Zakat funds support over 30 programs, including emergency relief, medical equipment, business capital, and education scholarships. Accessible Payment Channels: Payers can fulfill their obligations through the MyZakat app, online portal, 16 internet banking partners, e-wallets, or physical counters. Unique Services: PPZ-MAIWP offers the Monthly Zakat Deduction Scheme for employees and the Ride2U service for personalized collection at the payer’s location. Community Impact: MAIWP is responsible for safeguarding the interests of approximately 810,000 Muslims in the Federal Territories. Lain-lain Terbitan
