ZAKAT IN MALAYSIA

Established in 1991, Pusat Pungutan Zakat (PPZ-MAIWP) is the first zakat institution in Malaysia to adopt a corporate management model and computerized system to optimize zakat collection. While PPZ-MAIWP focuses on efficient collection via digital and physical channels, the Baitulmal under the Federal Territory Islamic Religious Council (MAIWP) manages the distribution of these funds to eight eligible asnaf categories. This specialized approach aims to address urban poverty and empower the Muslim community through diverse welfare, education, and economic assistance programs.

  • Specialized Management: In the Federal Territories, zakat roles are split: PPZ-MAIWP handles collection while MAIWP Baitulmal handles distribution.
  • Corporate Efficiency: PPZ-MAIWP utilizes a corporate structure and advanced IT to facilitate professional, user-friendly zakat transactions.
  • Diverse Distribution: Zakat funds support over 30 programs, including emergency relief, medical equipment, business capital, and education scholarships.
  • Accessible Payment Channels: Payers can fulfill their obligations through the MyZakat app, online portal, 16 internet banking partners, e-wallets, or physical counters.
  • Unique Services: PPZ-MAIWP offers the Monthly Zakat Deduction Scheme for employees and the Ride2U service for personalized collection at the payer’s location.
  • Community Impact: MAIWP is responsible for safeguarding the interests of approximately 810,000 Muslims in the Federal Territories.
